Wooden Cabbage Country House B&B
, East Chelborough, Dorset.
For lovers of the English countryside, Wooden Cabbage Country House looks like perfection. It would settle comfortably onto the pages of Homes & Gardens or Country Life. It's clear that the fabulous garden surrounding the house is Martyn's pride and joy, and when the season's right the house is filled with flowers. Guests are welcome to walk in the garden and the surrounding fields, or just take tea on the terrace. Either way, they may be lucky enough to see the local deer visiting.
Fruit from the garden will feature in the breakfasts, along with local eggs, bacon and sausages and Susie's renowned homemade granola. Breakfast is normally served in the garden room, although on a chilly morning you could be snuggled up beside the Aga.
The three bedrooms in the main house are two doubles and a twin, again featuring lots of fresh-cut flowers. Then in the new green oak barn is the special Oak Suite, a very spacious suite with a private entrance and a private designated parking space. All the rooms have delightful country views, top quality mattresses and bedlinen, flatscreen televisions, tea and coffee trays and of course a luxury en-suite bathroom.
Dorchester and the Jurassic Coast are within easy reach, but in this part of the country every field and every patch of woodland is a joy to behold.
And the name? Well, "wooden cabbages" are the local name for the stunted oak trees that grow locally all around the house.
